About the museum

The museum's roots lie in the psychiatric hospital in Risskov near Aarhus, the former Jydske Asyl of 1852. From 1902, the administrator Albert Lund collected objects made by patients; from 1921, the nurse Sigvardt Estrup organized the holdings systematically – this year is considered the beginning of the collection. In 1951 it received its own rooms in the attic of the main building and later grew into a public museum with workshops.

The museum is named after Louis Marcussen (1894–1985), who called himself Ovartaci. The trained painter from Ebeltoft spent 56 years as a psychiatric patient and created an extensive body of work there, including paintings, sculptures and dolls. He lived as a woman for a time, later returned to a male identity, and in 1979 was included in the exhibition "Outsider" at the Louisiana Museum.

In 2019 the museum left Risskov and moved into an interim location. In May 2023 it reopened in Kulturhus Bunkeren, the brutalist former journalism school on Olof Palmes Allé. The new permanent exhibition was developed in collaboration with the exhibition office of the Moesgaard Museum and interpreters from Den Gamle By; at the center of the museum lies the cloister garden "Hortus Conclusus" by the artist Albert Grøndahl.

Today the museum sees itself as the leading art brut museum in the Nordic countries. The collection comprises thousands of works by Ovartaci and other artists with experience of mental vulnerability; the collection on the history of psychiatry is accessible as an online exhibition. In 2025 the museum received a "Special Commendation" at the European Museum of the Year Award for its inclusive work.
