About the museum

The Odder Museum was founded in 1928 as a local history museum for the area around Odder (Hads Herred) and moved in 1956 into the decommissioned Odder Vand- og Dampmølle on the Odder Å. Since 2011 it has belonged organizationally to the Moesgaard Museum near Aarhus, but still operates as a separate venue with its own admission.

At the center is the mill built in 1883, which was modernized several times until operations ceased in 1955. Original millstones stand there next to later roller mills, so that the transition from craft to industry can be seen in a so-called half-height custom mill – a rare type of construction today. Visitors can follow the grain's path from the grain loft to the bagging on the first floor, where the groats "Stærkoddergryn" were once produced.

The older residence of the miller's family from 1844 originally belonged to the predecessor mill Sandager Mølle. Here you can see peasant furniture, kitchenware from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, and finds from the castles Bjørnkær and Kjærsgaard, including the so-called Bjørnkær set: ceramic parts from the late 14th century that are considered the oldest known distillation apparatus in Scandinavia.

The grounds also include a stable building, about 400 square meters of modern exhibition rooms for changing exhibitions on local history and art, an ornamental garden with a millpond, and the local archive of Odder. The museum is also known for its program of lectures and guided hikes in the landscape.
