Temporarily closed
Temporarily closed (expected until 2027). The new Museum Perron1 in the former post office building at the station is being converted; reopening is planned for around the turn of the year 2026/2027. The exhibition at Adelgade 5 is closed.

About the museum

The foundation of the collection was laid in 1913 by the estate of the lawyer Herman Christian Arent, with about 10,000 mostly Stone Age antiquities. From 1914 to 1951 this Arent collection could be seen, for an admission fee, in the tower of Skanderborg Castle Church, until dampness forced its closure. The excavations at Illerup Ådal from 1951 onward sparked new interest in regional history; the museum association was founded in 1952. In 1971 an exhibition opened in the Morten Børup School, and in 1979 the museum moved into the former judge's and town bailiff's farmstead at Adelgade 5, a building from the first half of the 18th century.

In 1984 the Skanderborg Museum received state recognition. Departments were gradually added: in 1995 the Freedom Museum (Frihedsmuseet) in Skanderborg Dyrehave, in 2007 Øm Kloster and in 2008 the Ferskvandsmuseet and the museum in the Gl. Rye mill; in 2009 all local archives of the municipality were connected. Since 2015 the institution has been called Museum Skanderborg and is responsible for the entire cultural history of the municipality.

Because Adelgade offered hardly any room for expansion, the municipality decided in 2019 to convert the former post office building at Skanderborg station for the museum and archive. The archive moved in at the end of 2018, the administration at the beginning of 2020. Since autumn 2024 the building has been converted under the name Perron1 into a new town museum directly on the tracks; reopening with new exhibitions is planned for around the turn of the year 2026/2027.
