About the museum

The open-air museum was founded in 1992 as Andelslandsbyen Nyvang. The name referred to the Danish cooperative movement (andelsbevægelse), whose importance for the countryside and society the museum aims to convey. Because inquiries kept arriving from people looking for a cooperative apartment, the institution has been called Oplevelsescenter Nyvang since 2021.

On about 42 hectares on the outskirts of Holbæk, a village with more than 30 buildings has been created, showing the period between 1930 and 1959. It includes farms, a cooperative dairy, a consumer co-op store, bakery, pharmacy, village school, hair salon, toy shop, craftsmen's workshops, an assembly house, and an aircraft hangar. Most recently a seaside hotel was added, which opened in 2024.

Nyvang is run by an independent institution with a board and a small group of permanent employees. The real backbone, however, is several hundred volunteers who are organized in dozens of guilds (laug) and who work, demonstrate, and tell stories in the buildings on opening days. Visitor numbers have risen significantly in recent years.
