About the museum

Odense Ægforretning A/S had the building on Lindevej constructed in 1921 to plans by the architect Vilhelm Olsen in the style of the "Bedre Byggeskik" movement, as an egg-packing house with a preservation cellar. At that time the company was Denmark's largest private egg dealer and exported mainly to England. On the ground floor, the eggs collected from producers in the surrounding area were candled, sorted, and packed; in the cellar, up to three million eggs were stored in lime water in 30 basins so that they would keep over the winter.

Preservation ended in the late 1950s, and the packing house closed at the turn of the year 1979/80. In 1980 the independent institution Æglageret was founded, and Holbæk Kunstforening moved in as a tenant. Windows were bricked up to gain hanging space, an office and shop were added; in 2020–21 the building, which is worthy of preservation, was extensively renovated.

Today the art association shows changing exhibitions of contemporary art on the ground floor. Since 2017 the cellar has housed Denmark's egg museum – by its own account the building is the last surviving old egg store in the country. There is also a shop with crafts, the Kunstlaboratorium for children and young people in cooperation with the Holbæk Kulturskole, and a garden of around 1,000 square meters. Operations are run by volunteers.
