Nørre Jernløse Mølle
Working museum mill near Regstrup: a Dutch-style windmill from 1853 that once stood on Copenhagen's ramparts and was moved to Nørre Jernløse in 1885.
About the museum
The galleried Dutch windmill was built in 1853 on the Nørrevold in København, near Sankt Peders Stræde, as a replacement for an older post mill. When the rampart fortifications lost their military significance and were torn down in the late 19th century, the mill was sold for dismantling in 1885. The farm owner Niels Peter Rasmussen had it transported in pieces by horse-drawn wagon about 70 kilometers to Nørre Jernløse and rebuilt there.
Under later owners the operation was expanded: a sawmill was added in 1901, a grain store in 1920, and in 1922 the mill received an automatic fantail and shutter sails. After a storm destroyed the sails in 1954, grinding continued by electric power only.
From 1979, the then Jernløse Kommune had the mill restored under the supervision of the National Museum's mill committee and returned to its pre-1922 condition, with hand-turned cap and sail blades; the sails were mounted again in 1981. On June 20, 1993, the independent institution Nr. Jernløse Møllelaug took over the site. Since then, the volunteer mill association has operated and maintained it as a working museum, grinding flour again and showing visitors the three millstone pairs, the sifter, and the grits crusher.
