Ringe Museum
Local history museum for Central Funen in Ringe's old village school from 1704 – with earrings made from the gold of the stolen Golden Horns.
About the museum
The building on the church square in Ringe was built in 1704 as a school; it was donated by Anne Helvig, the owner of the Boltinggård estate. After the manorial family gave Ringe Kirke an organ in 1740, the teacher also had to play as organist – hence the nickname “Organistskolen.” With the opening of the Guldhøjskolen in 1920, schooling there ended.
In 1923 the Midtfyns Museumsforening moved into its first rooms in the former school; this founded the Ringe Museum. To this day the volunteer-run association operates the building, collects and registers objects from Central Funen, and, together with the Local History Archive, has published the magazine “Råthinge-Posten” since 1979.
The best-known piece in the collection is a pair of earrings said to contain remains of the Golden Horns, which were stolen and melted down in 1802: the thief Niels Heidenreich gave them to his landlady, who came from Ringe, instead of rent, and her great-grandchildren donated them to the museum. In addition, the museum permanently shows, among other things, a hairdresser's salon and the exhibitions “Kiksen” and “Stationer”; in 2026 the school and church exhibitions will be renewed.
