About the museum
The Koyta local heritage museum in Sandur is a restored dwelling in Norðara Koyta, built by Hanus Jóhannesarson (Hanus í Koytu) when he settled there in 1812. The museum bought the house in 1988 and restored it to show how ordinary people lived.
Settlement in Koyta is old; land registers show that people lived there in 1584. Sandur is probably the place where people first settled on Sandoy, with archaeological evidence from the 900s. The finds include a longhouse, graves of prominent people and the only coin find in the Faroe Islands.
