About the museum
Kirkjubøargarður in Kirkjubøur on Streymoy has been the home of the same farming family for 17 generations. The smoke room is the oldest part of the buildings and has been the farmhouse since 1557; before that it was part of the bishop's farm.
The room was the centre of the house, built around a hearth, and it served at the same time as kitchen, workroom, living room and bedroom. Visitors can walk through this part of the house, which shows tools from farming and housekeeping that date back to around 1100. Groups can book a light meal, coffee or dinner in the historic house.
