About the museum

Skive Museum opened in 1942, in the middle of the Second World War, in a bright new building by the architect Leopold Teschl that was widely noted at the time. However, moisture and cracks affected the building early on; during a renovation in 1957–59 it received a cladding of wood and copper. From the beginning the museum combined art, cultural history objects, and a Greenland collection; in 1959 the art museum was separated as its own institution, but both continued to share the building.

Since 2008 the museum has belonged to the Museum Salling group, which also includes Spøttrup Borg, Fur Museum, and Glyngøre Kulturstation. For a time the museum bore the name Krydsfelt Skive. After a comprehensive renovation with an extension, it reopened in September 2018. On January 1, 2025, it was converted into a pure art museum and has since been called Skive Kunstmuseum.

The collection extends from the mid-19th century to the present. Its focal points are works by the artists connected with the region, Christen Dalsgaard, Hans Smidth, and Emilie Demant Hatt, Danish Neorealism, and expressive landscape painting, for example with works by Jens Søndergaard and Per Kirkeby. In addition to the collection presentation, the museum shows two special exhibitions a year and runs an art school for children and adults.
