Glyngøre Kulturstation
Local museum in the 1884 train station on the Limfjord: Glyngøre, the Salling Railway, fishing, and life in the fjord, with a wave machine.
About the museum
Glyngøre was at the northern end of the Salling Railway from Skive, which connected here to a railway ferry to Nykøbing Mors. The station building was designed by the railway architect Thomas Arboe; it was finished for the opening of the line in May 1884. Passenger trains stopped until 1971, and freight traffic continued until the end of 1979. After that the building served as a post office, bus station, and rental apartments, among other things.
In 1990 a local history museum was set up in the old station. Today the Kulturstation belongs to the state-recognized Museum Salling, which runs several sites in Skive Kommune; the local archive Lokalarkivet Sallingsund is also housed in the same building.
The exhibition revolves around the Limfjord and its importance for the people of the area: the railway that turned Glyngøre from a fishing village into a lively small town, fishing, fishing gear, and industry, and the animal life underwater. Every year a new summer exhibition opens on Saint John's Eve; in December, at the "Mørkning", a secret guest tells a story every day at twilight.
