SMK Thy
Branch of the Danish national gallery SMK in the village of Doverodde on the Limfjord: changing shows with works from the national collection in a warehouse and silo.
About the museum
SMK Thy is the first permanent location of the Statens Museum for Kunst outside København. The impetus came in 2016 from Thisted Municipality, which offered the national gallery to show works from its collection in the old packing house of Doverodde in Sydthy. The location directly on the Limfjord and the commitment of the municipality and residents convinced the museum to carry out its long-cherished plan for a location far from the capital.
In the following years the SMK built contacts with local partners and tried out formats on site. In 2023 the conversion began: the historic packing house was carefully dismantled and rebuilt according to today's safety and climate requirements; a striking grain silo was added. The plans come from the firm Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter. A large grant from the A.P. Møller Fonden financed the conversion and the opening exhibitions.
SMK Thy opened on August 29, 2025. On around 200 square meters of exhibition space, the museum shows new selections each year from the national collection of about 200,000 works as well as contemporary art, always in dialogue with architecture, local history, and landscape. Since 2026 the museum has been open from Easter through the end of the autumn holidays. Next door are the Naturlandsbyen and the restaurant Centralen.
