About the museum

Værløse Museum was founded in 1948 to preserve the cultural heritage of the Værløse area. Until the end of 2006 it was run by the local historical society; its collection was housed at the Mosegaarden farm, while the local history archive was elsewhere. Mosegaarden has served as a museum since the 1960s. In 2007 the museum and the archives and museums of Farum were merged into the independent institution Furesø Museer, which today also operates the Immigrantmuseet and the general store Cornelen in Farum.

The farm dates back to the late 18th century. It got its name in 1914 from the then 15-year-old Sophie Petersen, whose family moved onto the farm near the moorland south of the village of Værløse. In her diary she recorded the construction of a new stable wing almost daily in 1925. Volunteer craftsmen have rebuilt further old buildings around the farm, including the Gadekærshuset and a smithy, which was built as a copy of the old village smithy of Kirke Værløse and celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2026. A small thatched house that citizens built themselves in 2004 contains the Museet for Kajs Avis: with a printing press and other items, it commemorates the Hareskov-Værløse Avis, which Kaj Øgaard Sørensen published as a printed local newspaper from 1945 to 2006.

In 2026 an extensive renovation began: in the west wing a "Historisk LAB" with a small exhibition, workshop, and lecture room is being created, and in the east wing a new permanent exhibition on the development of the Furesø area over the last hundred years – from farmland to a modern welfare municipality. The museum is collecting memories and objects from the population for it.
