About the museum
The Baer House Museum is on Veski street, on the slope of Toome Hill in Tartu. The classicist wooden house, completed in 1864, is one of Tartu’s distinctive historic buildings. From 1869 to 1896 the world-famous natural scientist Karl Ernst von Baer lived here; his research had a major influence on biology and medicine.
The house was restored as a museum in 1976 to present both the building and the story of its famous resident. The historic rooms give an impression of the life and work of a 19th-century Tartu scientist. The museum also houses the Karl Ernst von Baer Centre for the History of Science, which belongs to the Estonian University of Life Sciences.
Visitors can book a guided tour, during which Baer’s life, his research and his place in the history of science are discussed.
