About the museum
The Skulptor Endel Taniloo kortermuuseum (Sculptor Endel Taniloo Flat Museum) was founded by the artist himself in 2005 in his former living quarters on Jakobi Street in Tartu. The museum was created as a civic initiative and is currently looked after by relatives: the artist's son and grandson present it to visitors and organise visits. The house was built in 1811 by the family of the German painters von Kügelgen, who came from Reinimaa.
Endel Taniloo (1923–2019) was an Estonian sculptor who worked mainly in figure, portrait and monumental sculpture. Over almost sixty years he produced about a thousand works and organised more than thirty solo exhibitions. He studied at the Tartu Teachers' Seminary, at the Higher Art School Pallas and at the Tartu State Art Institute, and for decades he taught at the Tartu Kunstikool (Tartu Art School).
The collection contains more than 200 works. The oldest are wooden animal figures made during Taniloo's school years, and a reclining female nude from his Pallas years (1943–1944). The display includes nude sculptures in various materials, the series of granite masks “Kivist külalised” (Guests of Stone), and designs for monuments, for example the design for the F. R. Kreutzwald monument in Kadriorg, Tallinn, and the design “Aukivi õpetajale” (Honour Stone for a Teacher). Several installations date from the new millennium, for example “Riide lugu” (The Story of Cloth), “Kalamehe lugu” (The Fisherman's Story) and “Mere lugu” (The Story of the Sea).
