About the museum
The Tallinn Raeapteek (Town Hall Pharmacy) is located on Town Hall Square and is Europe’s oldest pharmacy still operating in the same premises. The exact founding date is not known, but the register book of the Tallinn town council shows that by 1422 the pharmacy already had its third owner. The building is among the important medieval buildings of Tallinn’s Old Town, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
From 1582 to 1911 the pharmacy was owned for ten generations by the Burchart family; from 1911 to 1940 it belonged to the families Lehbert and Schneider. The pharmacy’s 1695 price list, the TAXA, included 54 kinds of water, 128 oils and 71 medicinal teas, and among the items listed was marzipan, which was used to relieve lovesickness and restore memory. In the Middle Ages the pharmacy was also a meeting place for the council and other influential people.
Today a museum operates alongside the pharmacy, offering guided tours and workshops for children and adults. The pharmacy sells both modern medicines and medieval claret and marzipan. The Raeapteek takes part in the Medieval Days and is open late on the annual Museum Night.
