About the museum
The Tallinna Rüütliordude Muuseum (Tallinn Museum of Knightly Orders) is located in Tallinn Old Town on Kuninga Street and presents orders and decorations from all over the world. An order is an officially recognised organisation that grew out of a brotherhood of knights, and membership in it signals honour and merit. An order awards its members a distinctive decoration, which often depends on a personal achievement.
The collection includes, for example, the Polish Order of the White Eagle, the Most Exalted Order of the Indian Empire, the Royal Order of the Seraphim, the Danish Order of the Dannebrog, the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, the Order of the Golden Fleece, the Military Order of Maria Theresa, the Order of the Chrysanthemum, the Most Holy Order of the Annunciation and the Most Noble Order of the Garter. The last of these is the world's oldest royal order, and its insignia are particularly distinctive. Among the exhibits is the foreign order of Peter I, which is described as the only surviving example, as well as the unique insignia of the Polish Order of the White Eagle.
The museum also works in education: schools are offered tours of up to 40 minutes, in which the orders are presented and role-plays are played; if required, a knightly ceremony is held.
