About the museum
Suur Tõll was built in 1914 at the Vulcan Werke AG shipyard in Stettin, today's Szczecin, on the order of the Russian Empire, to break ice in the Gulf of Tallinn. The ship was one of the most powerful icebreakers of its time and is one of three steam icebreakers from the early 20th century preserved in the Baltic Sea. During its life it sailed under the flags of the Russian Empire, Finland, the Soviet Union and the Republic of Estonia, and bore the names Tsar Mihhail Fjodorovitš, Volõnets, Wäinämöinen and Suur Tõll.
Suur Tõll is Estonia's national maritime symbol and, as the most modern icebreaker of its construction period, an important technical monument. It is also the only surviving steamship that was in use in Estonia in the 1920s and 1930s. The history of the ship reflects well the turning points of the Estonian state in the 20th century.
Today the icebreaker stands at the Lennusadam quay as a museum ship of the Eesti Meremuuseum (Estonian Maritime Museum). On board are the officers' mess and the captain's cabin, the crew's quarters, an exhibition on the history of the icebreaker, and the engine and boiler rooms. The exhibition tells the story of the ship through all the flags under which it has sailed. A guided tour of the ship can also be booked, and events and seminars are held on board.
