About the museum

The Tarvastu muuseum opened on 29 December 2011 on the first floor of the library building on Posti street in Mustla. Items for the museum began to be collected by Leida Vaher, former director of the Tarvastu culture house. The former parish house was converted into a library in 2005, and renovation of the museum rooms began in 2009. The museum is supported by the Tarvastu Muuseumi Sõprade Selts (Friends of the Tarvastu Museum Society), founded in 2006.

The museum collects, preserves and exhibits objects relating to the culture and history of the Tarvastu parish and the former Tarvastu rural municipality. The permanent exhibition “Tarvastu kihelkonna varasem ajalugu” (“Earlier History of Tarvastu Parish”) focuses on the Estonian farm: farm work, tools, folk costumes, and the local language and culture. In addition, the formation of Mustla, the Tarvastu Order castle, the Mensenkampff family and the beginnings of school education are presented.
