About the museum
The Viljandi Museum is in the old pharmacy building of Viljandi, on Johan Laidoner Square. The permanent exhibition on two floors gives an overview of the past of Viljandi County through archaeological finds, historical objects and stories. The Middle Ages are represented by a model of the Viljandi Order castle with objects of the period; there is also a model of a farmhouse living room with folk costumes and jewellery. There is an overview of local life and events of the 19th and 20th centuries, and a film can be watched.
From 1 June 2025 the museum has operated as a foundation (previously a state institution). The museum’s branch is the Mart Saar House Museum in the village of Karjasoo.

Wheelchair movement is made difficult in all buildings by steps and narrow spaces. Wheelchairs can move on the lower floor; reaching the upper floor is difficult because of the narrow and steep staircase of the historic building, and a large stone staircase leads to the entrance. There is no toilet in the exhibition building; there is one toilet in the outbuilding. Visitors with guide dogs may visit, but this must be agreed in advance.
