About the museum
The Ähtäri local heritage museum is located in the village of Hankavesi, on a farm plot separated from the main Hankola farm in 1802. A curate's parsonage stood on the site in the 1770s. The present main building was probably built by the parish blacksmith and farmer Heikki Heikinpoika Hankola, who was master of the farm from 1772 to 1790. The building served, among other things, as a telephone exchange from 1933 to 1952. The farm passed to the Ähtäri Society (Ähtäri-Seura) in 1959, and the museum began operating in 1960.
The main building has rooms from different eras: a tupa (living room) from the 18th and 19th centuries, a hall from the 1930s, the master's chamber from around the turn of the 20th century, and a young girl's chamber from the 1950s. The exhibition also presents the wartime period, the shoemaker's trade and men's bespoke work. The collection includes, among other things, a sword from the time of the Finnish War (1808).
The yard contains several buildings brought from different parts of Ähtäri, such as the Harakkamylly (magpie mill) built in 1875 and still in working order, a stable building from the 1770s, the Posti-Julia's granary from 1789, a smoke sauna from the 1940s and other granaries.
