About the museum
Brinkens museum in Yttermalax is an open-air museum with around twenty buildings, most of them from the 19th century. The main building is Orregården from 1879, which stands on its original site with an almost intact interior. The farm is named after the Orre siblings, who donated the land, the houses and the movable property to the museum. The sisters’ textiles, vessels, furniture, photographs and school reports from two generations are preserved in the house.
The museum garden has a history spanning a hundred years and has been restored to its condition in the 1930s, with a flower display as well as a butterfly garden and a herb garden. Hilda Orre sold the garden’s flowers, fruit and root vegetables at the Vaasa market square several days a week in summer and autumn.
The site includes, among other things, the Tuuvasgården farm, about 200 years old, a mangle house, a häbre, a soldier’s croft, summer pasture huts (fäbodar) and milk huts. In a barn from the 18th century the exhibition “Bondens år” (The Farmer’s Year) shows tools and implements from everyday farm life. The archaeology exhibition displays an authentic Malax brooch from the Migration Period, and a two-kilometre Iron Age trail passes about forty cairns and an information hut. The collections comprise around 17,000 objects and 5,000 textiles. The museum association also manages a crown storehouse (kronomagasin) from 1754 and a mill in Malax village.
