About the museum
The Tikanojan taidekoti is housed in a building that is one of the first residential buildings erected after the great fire of Vaasa. Church builder Erkki Kuorikoski designed the house as a home for his family, and it was completed in the early 1860s. Commercial Counsellor Frithjof Tikanoja moved into the house in 1918 with his wife Ruusa Mynt, and in the 1920s the family grew to six children.
Paintings by Ruusa’s brother, the painter Eemu Mynt, as well as works by foreign modernists, hung in the Tikanoja home. Frithjof Tikanoja wanted to give others the chance to experience the impact of art, and on 22 December 1951 he donated his book and art collection to the City of Vaasa. The new art museum opened to the public on 26 December 1951.
The collection includes more than a thousand works, among them many of the key Finnish and foreign artists of art history. The Art Home shows exhibitions of old Finnish and foreign art, cultural-historical theme exhibitions and exhibitions drawn from the museum’s own collections.
