About the museum
The Kolttien perinnetalo (Skolt Heritage House) is an authentic Skolt farm from the reconstruction period, with its outbuildings, in Sevettijärvi. The state had houses built for the Skolts who had been evacuated, designed to take account of Skolt building traditions. The buildings of the heritage house were originally built at Kirakkajärvi, but the farm was never settled, and the buildings that stood empty were moved to their present site in the early 1990s.
The Skolt Sámi belong to the Eastern Sámi and are Orthodox in religion. After the Second World War, the Skolt Sámi evacuated from Suonikylä were settled in the Sevettijärvi and Näätämö areas in 1949.
The heritage house’s exhibition presents the history and present day of the Skolt Sámi through objects, photographs and handicrafts. In 2007 an open-air museum area was made in the yard, a reconstruction of the summer place from the Suonikylä period. It includes residential buildings, a niliaitta (storehouse), a smoke sauna and a traditional stitched-bark Skolt Sámi boat. The heritage house has a small museum shop. The site is maintained by the Sámi Museum Siida.
