About the museum
The Kuortane house museum opened in 1958, about ten years after the founding of the Kuurtanes Society. The main building is the Keski-Hynnilä house, around which 14 buildings from different parts of Kuortane have been assembled. The buildings date from the 1500s to the 1900s: the oldest is a smoke cabin (savupirtti) from the late 1500s, and the newest is the Pihkahovi bunker, built in 1994. The museum has about 2,500–2,800 objects.
The site also has a church museum, housed in the Ala-Kulju granary moved from Mäyry village. Objects from Kuortane's old church and cemetery have been collected there, for example an old altarpiece, an eight-branched candlestick and a communion wine flagon, as well as grave posts, a foot-stocks (jalkapuu) and a shame bench made by local carvers. The bunker museum, built by the Kuortane war veterans, tells of a time when Finland's fate was under threat.
In summer the yard of the house museum also serves as a venue for summer theatre, and during the July Kuhinat festivities, Museokuhinat events are held.
