About the museum
Pargas hembygdsförening r.f. (Pargas Local Heritage Association) was founded in 1928 with the aim of maintaining the local heritage museum, collecting and documenting the local cultural heritage and arousing interest in Pargas local history. The association organises programmes and activities, and in recent years it has invested in children's activities, the renovation of buildings and new volunteers. The association has about 170 members, of whom about twenty are very active and look after building maintenance, gardening, serving, guided tours and craft demonstrations.
The local heritage museum offers a pleasant oasis in the middle of the town, with plants of every kind and plenty of room for children to play and run. Knowledgeable guides tell of everything from crofter life and old customs to local ghost stories and folk belief. The main building, Ordenshemmet, is currently being renovated with support from, among others, the EU rural development programme.
The association also runs the Industrimuseet at the edge of the quarry, where visitors can see the largest open-pit mine in the Nordic countries and gain an insight into the importance of limestone quarrying for the locality, as well as the geological exhibition at the Storgård farm. The association also owns Ella Janssons stuga, Kyrkkvartersstugan, Björkfeldtska lillstugan and the former fire station on Gamla Malmen, which can easily be explored on one's own with the help of QR codes.
