About the museum

Ida Aalberg -museo operates in Leppäkoski, in the former railway foreman’s house between the school and the railway line in Janakkala. The house was built during the first phase of the oldest railway line, and in 1862 the railway foreman Antti Ahlberg lived there; he was the father of the future great diva, actress Ida Aalberg (originally of the Ahlberg family). The house was owned by the Ahlbergs until the early 1900s. The building is covered by an agreement protecting nationally significant station areas, and it is a rarity among railway buildings.

The house has housed Ida Aalberg -museo since 1976. Ida Aalberg (1857–1915) was the most significant and internationally best-known Finnish actress of her time. She belonged to the Suomen Teatteri (Finnish Theatre) from 1874 to 1883 and visited it regularly afterwards; she also performed on foreign stages, including in Scandinavia, Germany and Hungary.

The purpose of the permanent exhibition is to bring out the unique history of the museum building and the significance of the railways both for Ida Aalberg’s career and for the village of Leppäkoski. The exhibition honours Aalberg’s life’s work both as an artist who built an international career and as a private individual born in Janakkala.
