About the museum
The Saarion voimalaitosmuseo (Saario Power Station Museum) operates along the Jänisjoki river in the village of Saario in Tohmajärvi, in the old power station building next to the present hydroelectric plant. Mills operated on the rapids as early as the 1700s, and a millstone in the museum yard recalls them. Planning for electricity production began at the end of the 1800s, and construction was started by Wärtsilä. The power station was completed in 1908.
The red-brick power station building is Central European neo-Gothic industrial architecture, and inside it are still the original generators, turbine governors and marble control panels. The Saario plant is one of Finland’s oldest power stations in which the original machinery is still in place.
When a new power station was built next to the old one in 1984, Wärtsilä intended to demolish the old part. The Saario village committee, however, proposed that it be turned into a museum. The museum is maintained by Tohmajärvi-Seura ry, and its virtual museum can be explored online at any time.
