About the museum
Suomen kansallismuseo (National Museum of Finland) holds the most comprehensive collection of Finnish cultural history. The collections comprise around 590,000 objects, including numismatic, historical, ethnographic, independence-era, Finno-Ugric, maritime, music and prison history collections, as well as architectural elements.
The museum building was designed by Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren and Eliel Saarinen. The house on Mannerheimintie, with its granite façade and soapstone decoration, is one of the main works of Finnish National Romanticism.
The museum has been closed since autumn 2023 because of a thorough renovation and extension of the building. The renovation of the old main building has been completed, and the new extension was handed over to the museum in August. The renovated museum will open to the public in spring 2027. Three permanent exhibitions are being prepared, covering prehistory (10,000 BCE–1100 CE), the years 1100–1900, and the time of independence from 1900. A café and restaurant as well as two new museum shops are due to open in April 2027.
