About the museum
The money museum run by the Bank of Finland is located in central Helsinki, next to the Bank of Finland, at the foot of Helsinki Cathedral, at Snellmaninkatu 2. The museum is intended for everyone interested in the economy and social issues, and its task is to increase citizens' knowledge of the economy, the Bank of Finland and the Eurosystem.
The exhibition is built around four themes: the history of money and banking, monetary policy, economic literacy and banknote art. The history section presents turning points in Finnish history from an economic perspective and shows how the Bank of Finland developed from a bank issuing roubles and kopecks into a full member of the Eurosystem.
The monetary policy section explains the workings of the Eurosystem, the objectives and decision-making of monetary policy, how the stability of the financial system is ensured and how cash is put into circulation. The museum is home to the Talousosaamiskeskus (Economic Literacy Centre), whose guided tours and events deepen visitors' understanding of money and the economy.
