About the museum
The Nordean pankkimuseo (Nordea Bank Museum) is located in the old Yhdyspankki bank building at Aleksanterinkatu 36 B in Helsinki. The building was designed by architect Gustaf Nyström and completed in 1898; its façade is decorated with 11 relief sculptures by sculptor Walter Runeberg. A bank branch operated in the building until 1936. The museum is located in the building’s vault.
The heart of the museum is a culturally significant bank interior with its furniture. It was designed by the architectural firm Gesellius, Lindgren & Saarinen and came into use in 1904. The display includes part of the banking hall and the manager’s office, and the atmosphere is completed by banking objects from various commercial banks.
The history exhibition tells the story of Finnish commercial banking from the founding of Suomen Yhdyspankki in 1862, from the perspective of customers and the banking services available to them. The museum shows memorabilia from each of the 25 commercial banks in Nordea’s family tree, as well as rare Yhdyspankki banknotes issued in 1866 and 1882. A multimedia presentation shows the development of banking technology and the branches of predecessor banks, and old bank advertisements from the 1960s onward can be viewed.
