About the museum
The Suomen Partiomuseo (Finnish Scouting Museum) was founded on 21 February 1962 at a meeting of the leaders of the Varsinais-Suomi scout districts, on the proposal of Rafael Helanko. In 1963 the museum’s activities passed to Turun Partiolaiset ry (Turku Scouts), and the museum’s support association, Partiomuseoyhdistys (Scouting Museum Association), was founded in 1979. From 1983 the association has been a B member of Suomen Partiolaiset – Finlands Scouter ry (Finnish Scouts).
The museum’s first exhibition space opened in November 1975 at the basement level of the Vähä-Heikkilä manor (kuninkaanlatokartano), rented from the City of Turku. In 1980 the museum moved to the people’s room (väentupa) of Kuikkula House beside the square of St Catherine’s Church, and in 1995–1996 it moved to Raunistula, the former residence of the director of the Barker weaving mill. The museum’s emblem is adapted from the house mark of the master of Kuikkula House.
The museum is run by the Suomen Partiomuseoyhdistys ry, and its work is based on volunteering. The museum collects objects and image and document material that illuminate the past and present of the scouting movement. The museum also has a museum shop, which sells scout badges and books published by the museum.
