About the museum

Taistelijan talo is a war history museum in the village of Hattuvaara in Ilomantsi, near the eastern border. The building was constructed in 1988 as a tribute to the veterans of our wars. The buildings, exhibitions and objects tell of the war years and of the work and fighting of people in wartime to preserve independence.

Hattuvaara is linked to the defensive battles of Ilomantsi in the final phase of the Continuation War in summer 1944. At the battle sites there are memorials erected by veterans' units, and a signposted memorial trail, Taistelijan taival, runs through the area.

The exhibitions are indoors and outdoors. The exhibition “Sodasta rauhaan” (“From War to Peace”) deals with the wars of 1939–1945, the evacuees' trek and the post-war period through objects, maps, pictures and films. On display are, among other things, weapon collections, wartime equipment and trench art (puhdetyöt). There is also a Lotta Svärd exhibition and an exhibition on the life of Lauri Törni. In the outdoor area visitors can enter a bunker, see guns in a new gun shelter and rest at the Peace Stones.
