About the museum
The Vaasan auto- ja moottorimuseo is Finland's largest private car museum. It is owned by Vaasan Veteraaniautoseura ry (Vaasa Veteran Car Society) and opened in 1981. The museum has engines and cars from the early 20th century to the present day. The history of traffic and vehicles is presented through restored cars and other vehicles, such as a horse-drawn ambulance carriage from 1909.
The collection also includes fire engines and fire equipment, as well as bicycles, box vans, snowmobiles, motorcycles and mopeds. Among Vaasa's best-known engine makers were the Wickströmin Moottoritehdas and the Suomen Moottoritehdas, which made Olympia engines; the museum displays products from about twenty engine makers from Vaasa. Among the museum's rarities are the Fauvel AV 36 “flying wing” glider, built in Germany in 1958, an engine of a Hispano-Suiza V8 aircraft from 1923, and the engine and propeller of a DC-3 passenger aircraft from 1942.
The exhibitions are on three floors: the first floor has an Opel and Ford theme exhibition, the second floor sports cars and historic kanttiautot, and the third floor the Vintaasi vintti, which tells the cultural history of modern society. The museum also has a library.
