About the museum
The Argos Museum is run by the Association de sauvegarde du patrimoine radiomaritime (ASPR), founded by former professional radio operators. Since 1996, successive members have built the museum, which is housed in Le Portel in a reconstruction of the radio communications center at the cap d’Alprech. The entrance is behind a boat.
The collections, donated by shipowners and private individuals, show the equipment used on board fishing boats and ships: echo sounders, receivers, transmitters, Morse keys, radar and the DECCA navigation system, arranged by period. Screens, videos and sound and visual simulations explain life on board.
Volunteer guides, former professional radio operators, bring their trade back to life on a 1950s bridge. It is possible to communicate with the Boulogne Radio coastal station there and to watch live shipping traffic in the Channel. The route continues with a video on the modern maritime distress system, a trawler that can be visited in 3D with a virtual reality headset, a navigation simulator and an introduction to Morse code. A paleontology workshop also presents the fossil collection of one member.
