About the museum
The Quentovic Museum takes its name from the former Quentovic society. It was built up from association collections and from archaeological excavations carried out in the region. It holds the “Musée de France” label.
It was located on the main square of Étaples in two former 17th-century mansions. The first was built by Oudart Ohier, mayor of Étaples; the second belonged to Charles-Dauphin d’Halinghen, a lawyer and president of the Sénéchaussée of the Boulonnais. The owners’ initials appear on the keystones of the façades.
The visit presented archaeological remains tracing the history of the Strait and of maritime transport in prehistoric Europe, as well as a collection of minerals and fossils. After the safety commission’s inspection in February 2015, the town closed the museum because the building does not meet safety regulations. Teams are continuing to inventory the collections and offer activities in other municipal venues. The town is considering bringing the collections together in the Corderie building.
