About the museum

Jean-Charles Cazin was born in 1841 in the hamlet of Letoquoi, near Samer. He left for Paris in 1862, exhibited at the Salon des refusés in 1863, worked as a ceramicist in England in the early 1870s and, from 1877, received a commission for large paintings inspired by the Old Testament for the Gobelins manufactory. His wife Marie and their son Jean-Michel were also artists, as was Berthe Cazin, the last surviving member of the family.

In the late 1930s, thanks to the determination of Berthe Cazin, Auguste Chabert and the town council, a Musée Cazin-Coquelin came into being in Samer. This small municipal museum then went through many vicissitudes linked to the war; the town later sought to revive it and to highlight the artist’s work.

Fully renovated, the museum reopened at the end of September 2024 in the lobby of the town hall. It presents around a hundred paintings, ceramics, drawings, watercolors and prints by Jean-Charles Cazin and his circle, as well as historical documentation. It holds the “Musée de France” label.
