About the museum
The Centre d’histoire de la Résistance et de la Déportation is located in Varilhes, in Ariège. It traces the history of the Second World War in the département, from the Resistance fighting to the Liberation, including the role of Spanish refugees and the tragic fate of Jews.
The presentation is based on documents and objects linked to local history, accompanied by a few explanatory texts. This small museum is aimed at a broad public and invites visitors to remember the members of the Resistance and the victims of the war.
The commune of Varilhes was itself marked by the conflict: it had some twenty Resistance members and 23 deportees, and it received the Croix de guerre in 1948 for its part in the fight against the occupying forces. The centre is run by the Communauté d’agglomération Pays de Foix-Varilhes and also hosts temporary exhibitions and readings.
