About the museum
The Forges de Pyrène occupy the site of an old iron mill first mentioned in the 15th century. The forges were created during the Revolution, then converted around 1860 into a taillanderie, an edge-tool workshop. The forge hammer, a large water-powered hammer, dates from the mid-15th century and is listed as a historic monument. It is one of the last hammers of this type still in operation in France.
Today the site, managed by the Foix-Varilhes agglomeration, brings together two museum spaces and a reconstructed village evoking the Ariège of the 1900s. The museum of traditional trades presents more than a hundred trades and thousands of tools and utensils. The iron museum traces the mining and iron-and-steel history of the Ariège, from the extraction of the ore to its use, with period documents, photographs, objects and tools.
In the village, demonstrators bring to life everyday gestures of the past: blacksmith, clog maker, basket weaver, bread oven, the 1900 school, Pyrenean tales and, in summer, gold panning on the riverbank. Work carried out in 2025 improved access to several workshops and to the museum.

The forge hammer and the iron museum, protected as historic monuments, are not fully accessible; an interactive terminal in the museum of trades makes it possible to follow the forge hammer demonstration and to see the upper floor of the iron museum. Four reserved parking spaces are near the entrance. A wheelchair is lent free of charge against an identity document, and seats with walking sticks are available at reception. The reception desk is fitted with a hearing loop. For blind and partially sighted visitors: a raised-relief site plan, a large-print plan and large-print labels, magnifiers on request and objects to touch.
