About the museum

The Musée du Bois et de la Marqueterie in Revel, known as MUB, has existed since 1994. It grew out of the wish of Revel's craftspeople and the town council to create a place where the town's skills would be passed on; Revel was long called the capital of fine furniture. Its name is a contraction of Musée du Bois and is pronounced like the French word ‘meuble’ (furniture).

Fine-furniture making has been present in Revel since the late 19th century: in 1888 Alexandre Siméon Monoury founded a cabinetmaking and marquetry workshop there. In the 1940s and 1950s nearly 500 craftspeople worked in furniture making in Revel, compared with about fifty today. Exotic woods such as rosewood and mahogany arrived by the railway that then ran through the town.

The museum occupies the former Hall du Meuble revélois, covering about 1,500 m² over two floors. It presents the history of marquetry and its techniques, a collection of tools and trades, furniture made in Revel and a xylotheque, a kind of library of wood that records more than 200 species.

The museum works with the Lycée des métiers d’art, du bois et de l’ameublement in Revel and with craft associations, and it organizes exhibitions on the past and present work of local craftspeople.
