About the museum
The museum is run by the Société historique de Palaiseau, a volunteer association. Families from Palaiseau, and later from neighboring communes, gave it farm tools, everyday objects and clothing belonging to their grandparents. The society’s members rescued these objects, cleaned, restored and catalogued them.
From 1985, the number of objects gave rise to the idea of showing them to the public. Two exhibitions, in 1989 and 1990, were a great success. Since 1991, the collections have been displayed “in situ” in the Hôtel Brière, in the town center.
This town mansion was built between 1625 and 1650 by Jean Brière, notary of the lordship of Palaiseau. The town bought it in 1881, and it then served as a gendarmerie. The route evokes life in the village and in the countryside around 1900, with peasant interiors, a middle-class drawing room, Creil and Montereau earthenware and numerous craft workshops.
