About the museum
Alba was first a Gallic site, then a Roman town, Alba Helviorum, capital of the province of Helvie. In the 11th century, the bishops of Viviers had a keep built around which the population gathered, forming the first castrum.
The château then passed through several families, including the d'Aps, the Deux-Chiens, the Adhémar, the La Baume de Suze and the Montagut. It was the La Baume de Suze family who, in the 17th century, gave the Renaissance château its present appearance. The upheavals of the Revolution led to its confiscation and its division into lots sold to residents.
From 1880, Dr Gaillard restored the château; after 1974, Dr Magdeleine Frimat continued the work and opened the château to the public. The site has been listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments since 1939. Highlights include the green salon, the medieval kitchen, the king's room and the dance hall, and the château hosts summer exhibitions and concerts.
