Château de Faulin

About the museum

The Château de Faulin stands at the foot of a wooded hill, facing the Yonne valley, in Lichères-sur-Yonne in Burgundy. The site is mentioned as early as the 13th century. The Le Bourgoing family owned it for about three centuries, and the present manor dates from the late 15th century.

The estate has remained largely intact. It includes a chapel decorated with paintings from the early 17th century and a round dovecote. The whole estate, built and unbuilt, has been listed as a historic monument since 1993.

The château is privately owned and houses a museum of medieval technical innovation. Workshops present medieval inventions in fields such as agriculture, astronomy, clockmaking and printing, and explain why they were needed. Visitors can handle the instruments with a guide who explains how they were used.
