About the museum
The museum stands next to the Basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Vézelay, in the former monks’ dormitory. It keeps many original sculptures from the basilica, removed during the restoration led by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc from 1840 because they were too damaged or too fragile to remain in place.
On display are capitals, large sculptures from the façade and polychrome 17th-century statues. Drawings and watercolours by the architect show the reconstruction work of the time. All the pieces are displayed at eye level, making it possible to appreciate the quality of the stonework and to understand the teaching role of historiated capitals.
In 2005 the museum was named after Viollet-le-Duc, in the presence of his great-great-granddaughter, Geneviève Viollet-le-Duc.
