Temporarily closed (expected until 2026-11-07). The château-musée is temporarily closed. The town’s website announces its reopening on Saturday, November 7 with the exhibition “Un Château en Suède”.

About the museum

The castle of Nemours was built in the 12th century, probably between 1160 and 1190, by Gauthier I of Villebéon, chamberlain to the king. It then passed through the Villebéon family, to the Crown from 1274, and then to the House of Navarre, the Armagnacs, the Foix, the Medici, the Savoy-Nemours and the Orléans.

Sold as national property in 1810, it was bought by a local mayor and resold to the town the following year. In 1903 the town set up the Château-Musée de Nemours, initially built around the work of local sculptor Justin-Chrysostome Sanson.

The museum is now run by the town of Nemours. For safety reasons, only a third of the castle is open to visitors. It presents a permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions, and offers guided tours, children’s workshops and events.
