About the museum

The Cité des Climats et vins de Bourgogne came from an idea that emerged in 2010 among winegrowers: a cultural and tourist venue dedicated to Burgundy’s winegrowing heritage. The inscription of the Climats de Bourgogne on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015 gave the project decisive momentum. The Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne created the association that now runs a network of three sites, in Chablis, Beaune and Mâcon, which first opened in spring 2023.

In Chablis, the Cité occupies the cellar of the Petit Pontigny, a medieval building that belonged to the monks of Pontigny, whose work built the reputation of Chablis wines. For a long time it was the centre of the town’s festivities, and it had stood closed for several years before its renovation.

The architectural firm Correia Architectes & Associés restructured the cellar and completed it with a contemporary extension, distinct from the old building, for an area of nearly 900 m². The two wings frame a garden. The visit route highlights the vineyards of northern Burgundy: Chablisien, Grand Auxerrois (Auxerrois, Tonnerrois, Vézelien, Jovinien) and Châtillonnais.
