About the museum

The Auxerre Natural History Museum is a municipal museum with the “Musée de France” label. It holds around 160,000 natural history specimens: fossils, minerals, taxidermied animals, herbaria, skeletons and insects, gathered over roughly 250 years. These collections tell the story of the region's current and past biodiversity. The museum also holds 93 scientific reference specimens, mostly fossil fish and crustaceans.

The collections are shown in exhibitions and also serve researchers. The museum focuses on biodiversity, the environment and current scientific topics. It offers activities for schools and family workshops during school holidays, and takes part in national events such as the Nuit des musées (Museum Night), the Journées du patrimoine (European Heritage Days) and the Fête de la science (Science Festival).

The museum park is a French formal garden with clipped box hedges, laid out since the late 19th century. It is home to many tree species, including a ginkgo, giant thujas and a magnolia, as well as pollinating insects, hedgehogs, squirrels and many birds.
