About the museum
The Maison du Costume occupies a house in the historic center of Pernes-les-Fontaines, where a drapery shop was set up around 1860. The business prospered until the Second World War. The rise of ready-to-wear clothing in the 1950s then forced it to close.
The shop reopened in 1992, with its original shelving and counters laden with fabric bolts, household linen, quilted blankets, old shirts and haberdashery. The association Conservatoire du Costume Comtadin, founded in 2005, runs the place. Its mission is to study, restore and promote the traditional costume of the Comtat.
On the first floor are the former shop and two temporary exhibition rooms. On the second floor, three permanent rooms display authentic 19th-century costumes in showcases, worn by peasant women, craftswomen and bourgeois women. The upper floors house the association’s sewing workshops, open from October to June. The costumes on display change regularly, as old textiles are fragile.
