About the museum
The Musée de l'école d'autrefois in Monteux is housed on rue Aimé Dupré, in the former station buildings. It opened in September 2023. The museum is run by the town; the association Les Amis du Musée de l'école d'autrefois organises activities such as dictation sessions and calligraphy workshops.
The route recreates two classrooms: a late 19th-century classroom with wooden desks, the teacher's platform, a cabinet of curiosities, grey smocks, leather satchels and clogs, and a post-war classroom (1940–1965) with merit cards, blotters, inkwells, pen holders and needlework. Notable objects include an old reading-learning machine and a desk more than 200 years old.
Each visit is accompanied by a guide. Visitors write with a Sergent-Major pen and violet ink, search for hidden letters to find a mystery word, and watch a documentary about everyday life for schoolchildren, discipline and playground games.
