About the museum
The Droguier of the Institut des Sciences Pharmaceutiques et Biologiques (ISPB) of the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 is a heritage collection of natural substances of plant, animal or mineral origin used in pharmacy for therapeutic purposes. It also includes non-medicinal samples, such as dye plants and textile fibers, as well as medicines and scientific equipment from the early 20th century.
The first written record dates from 1850, when pharmacist and chemist Auguste-Antoine Dériard (1796–1873) gave his collection to the former école préparatoire de médecine et de pharmacie. It then comprised a few hundred samples. It was later enriched through collecting work and donations.
The collection was restored and opened to the public in 2010. It now comprises about 5,000 samples from around the world, displayed in early 20th-century wooden cabinets in the spirit of a cabinet of curiosities. Since 2021 it has been housed in the main building of the Rockefeller campus. A teaching drug cabinet open to the public complements the display with plants used in herbal medicine.
